  • Murray looks to turn things around in Shanghai

    10/10/10 5:11 PM | Ricky Dimon
Murray looks to turn things around in Shanghai Mired in a recent slump, Andy Murray will hope to pick up some momentum this week at the Shanghai Masters. He has a good opportunity to do just that in the softest section of the draw.

Andy Murray successfully defended his Canada Masters title in August, but it has been slow going for the Scot ever since. He lost to Mardy Fish in the Cincinnati quarters, was stunned by Stanislas Wawrinka in the U.S. Open third round, and just got blown out by Ivan Ljubicic in the Beijing quarters.

Murray will aim to reverse his fortunes this week at the Shanghai Masters, a tournament that he skipped last year. If the world No. 4 needed to catch a break, he may have done just that when the draw was revealed on Saturday. His quarter includes Mikhail Youzhny, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Sam Querrey, although all three of those potential opponents are on the other half of the section.

The only other seed in Murray's half, No. 16 Nicolas Almagro, is already gone; Almagro lost to Aleksandr Dolgopolov in a third-set tiebreaker on Sunday. Murray will likely open with Radek Stepanek before going up against either Dolgopolov, Marcos Baghdatis, or Jeremy Chardy.

Just how friendly is the No. 4 seed's path? By comparison, the fourth section of the Shanghai draw features Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych, Andy Roddick, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Ernests Gulbis, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Bangkok champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, and Beijing semifinalist Ivan Ljubicic.

First-round matchups to watch in Murray's quarter include Baghdatis vs. Chardy and Tsonga vs. Feliciano Lopez.

Oh my goodness! That quarter is loaded - Murray should be thanking his stars right now.
