World No. 3 Roger Federer will make his 2010 Asian hard-court debut, seeded third at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Shanghai. The Swiss is returning to competition for the first time since the US Open.
Third seed Roger Federer will begin his debut run at the 2010 Masters 1000 Shanghai, set to make his return after a semifinal finish at the US Open. The 29-year-old advanced to the final four in New York before falling to world No. 2 Novak Djokovic in five sets.
Federer, seeded directly behind Djokovic and ahead of world No. 4 Andy Murray, commences the event with a 44-11 season record. The former forld No. 1 has earned two championship titles this season, having taken home top honors at the Australian Open and Cincinnati.
The world No. 3 is located in the same quarter of the draw that hosts an array of hard-court capable players, including (5) Robin Soderling, (11) David Ferrer, (13) Marin Cilic, John Isner, Michael Llodra, and Janko Tipsarevic.
Additional competitors in Federer’s section are Thomaz Bellucci, Andrey Golubev, Yen-Hsun Lu, Andreas Seppi, and qualifiers Marsel Ilhan and Lukasz Kubot.
After an opening-round bye, Federer is slated to begin his bid against either Isner or Kubot. With successful passage into the next round, he looks to a likely meeting with the 14th-seeded Cilic. Further progress will lead to a possible clash with Soderling in the quarterfinals, then Djokovic in the semis.

I doubt if Soderling will make it past Golubev, so Federer needn't worry about him.
