World No. 1 Rafael Nadal continued his solid effort at the Japan Open, with a straight-set victory over quarterfinal-round opponent Dmitry Tursunov. The top seed set up a semifinal meeting with Viktor Troicki.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal took a step closer to securing his first Japan Open title having downed World No. 432 Dmitry Tursunov, 6-4, 6-1. The 24-year-old Mallorcan converted five of 10 break chances to seal a win in 72 minutes.
Nadal led by a break at 3-2 in the opening set, aided by a heavy forehand strike. Tursunov recovered the break to 4-4 with help from a lucky net cord. Nadal regrouped immediately, after a hitting a strong return of serve. The Spaniard collected double set-point at 5-4, then closed with a trademark forehand winner.
After missing two break chances in the opening game of set two, Nadal held double break-point at 1-1. A forehand winner gave the top seed a 2-1 edge. The Mallorcan went on to capture three consecutive games to 5-1. Two match points came quickly for Nadal, who ended the day with another heavy forehand blast.
"I played a good match, but he also made more mistakes after losing the first set," said Nadal. "It's good for the confidence to keep winning after taking an important title like the US Open. When I go on court and I see a full stadium like here today, it is very nice. It is good for everyone."
The No. 1 seed is scheduled to face Viktor Troicki for a place in the final. The Serbian outlasted Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the quarterfinal, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
