David Ferrer earns his third win over Robin Soderling in 10 tries, and he does it in convincing fashion on Friday in Beijing. Next up for Ferrer is a semifinal encounter with Ivan Ljubicic.
More stellar tennis from David Ferrer and a dismal performance by Robin Soderling resulted in a crushing 6-2, 6-4 win for Ferrer in the quarterfinals of the China Open on Friday. Ferrer set up a semifinal clash against Ivan Ljubicic after just one hour and 21 minutes of play.
It was clear from the beginning that current form would be a more important factor in this one than head-to-head history. Ferrer, who is coming off a semifinal showing in Kuala Lumpur and has been rock-solid ever since an amazing clay-court run, lost only five points in his first four service games. The 11th-ranked Spaniard earned two breaks in the opening set, more than enough to serve it out at 5-2.
Soderling showed signs of a comeback in set two when he raced to a 3-1 advantage. The third-seeded Swede even had 40-15 on his own serve for 4-1, but he ended up getting broken and that proved to be the final turning point. Ferrer broke at love for a 4-3 lead and consolidated it the rest of the way.
"Well, it was not perfect, of course," admitted Soderling, who served at a mere 49 percent and double-faulted five times. "But he played really well."
Ferrer is through to his 10th ATP semifinal of 2010, improving his season record to 51-18.
