  • Soderling, Ferrer need three sets to prevail

    10/7/10 4:19 PM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling, Ferrer need three sets to prevail Robin Soderling beats Nicolas Almagro in three sets on Thursday in Beijing. Soderling is joined in the quarterfinals by David Ferrer, who also needed three sets to get past Yen-Hsun Lu.

    (3) Robin Soderling d. Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 4-6, 6-3

Soderling held off Almagro in one hour and 56 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open on Thursday. A tough opening set was a sign of things to come, with neither man earning a single break point throughout the first 11 games of the match. Almagro, however, stumbled while serving to stay in the set a second time at 5-6 and Soderling capitalized on his first chance to take an early lead.

The first break of set two also proved to be decisive, as Almagro finally struck at 5-4 to force a third frame of play. The Spaniard saved five break points during the second to keep his hopes alive, but he could not fight off his opponent's one opportunity in the final set. Soderling consolidated a lone break as he served out the proceedings at 5-3. The fifth-ranked Swede fired 22 aces to Almagro's 18 en route to a quarterfinal showdown against David Ferrer.

    (8) David Ferrer d. Yen-Hsun Lu 6-3, 3-6, 6-1

Ferrer also survived a back-and-forth affair in second-round action on Thursday, taking out Lu after one hour and 59 minutes of play. Lu broke serve in the opening game of the match, but Ferrer quickly recovered for two breaks of his own leading to a one-set advantage. However, the roles were reversed in set two, with Chinese Taipei's No. 1 players using two breaks of his own to force a third.

In the end, though, Ferrer was simply too strong from the baseline. The 11th-ranked Spaniard dropped only five points in his last four service games despite putting in just 48 percent of his first deliveries during the final set. He also won 62 percent of his second-serve return points in that span. Ferrer finished it off with no trouble on his serve at 5-1 to wrap up his first-ever meeting with Lu.
