World No. 1 Rafael Nadal made the final eight at the Japan Open by virtue of his straight-set victory against Canadian qualifier Milos Raonic. The top seed will take on Dmitry Tursunov for a place in the semifinals.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal advanced to his 15th consecutive ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season on Thursday. The 24-year-old, successfully extending his record to 63-8, defeated qualifier Milos Raonic of Canada. The Mallorcan passed through the match unbroken, having saved four of four break points through one hour and 13 minutes.
Nadal fought off four break chances at 2-3 in set two before taking the next three of four games. The Spaniard captured 80% of his first-serve points en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
"It was a good win for me against a difficult player," said Nadal. "He can become a very good player. I don't know when, but he will be very close to the top positions. I was under big pressure to break his serve, I did very well to convert two out of two break points."
Nadal will take on Dmitry Tursunov in the quarterfinals. The Russian reached the final eight with a three-set win over Richard Gasquet, 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-4.
