Radek Stepanek def. Marco Chiudinelli 5-7, 7-6(7), 4-1 (retired)
Radek Stepanek is through to the quarterfinal, after opponent Marco Chiudinelli retired with a lower back injury. The 31-year-old Czech veteran had secured a critical break of serve, when the Swiss called it a day, trailing 1-4 in the decider.
"I was always behind, hanging in there until he had the problem with his back," said Stepanek. "But it is also tough when you know your opponent has got an injury. In the third set he could not serve anymore. I hope he gets well as soon as possible.
"I got mono this year, then [a] knee injury. I did not play for six months. Only after the US Open I started feeling good about my game. It is not easy to come back as you can see with [Juan Martin] del Potro and Jo [Tsonga] this week."
Stepanek is next to face Jarkko Nieminen for a place in the semifinal. The Finn downed Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the round of 16, 6-3, 7-6(8).
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. (6) Feliciano Lopez 7-6(5), 6-4
Bangkok champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez continued his winning ways with a straight-set ousting of countryman Feliciano Lopez. The 27-year-old Spaniard saved four of four break points through one hour and 32 minutes of play. With the victory, Garcia-Lopez reached his fifth ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season.
"The key was the tie-break, he was up 5-4 and serving and I came back to win it," said Garcia-Lopez. "After that I had more confidence and he got down. When I beat Rafa [Nadal] in Bangkok, it was the best match in my career. I think I am playing my best tennis, I have won seven matches in a row now."
Garcia-Lopez will take on either fourth seed Jurgen Melzer or Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinal.
