Bangkok finalist Jarkko Nieminen advanced to the Japan Open quarterfinals after taking out Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets. Dmitry Tursunov also advanced, having outlasted Richard Gasquet in the round of 16.

World No. 48 Jarkko Nieminen made his third consecutive tour-level quarter, following his 6-3, 7-6(8) success over Daniel Gimeno Traver of Spain. The Bangkok runner-up held 11 of 11 service games through one hour and 26 minutes of play. With the round of 16 success, 29-year-old is through to his third Tokyo quarterfinal.
Nieminen is due to meet Radek Stepanek in the quarterfinal. The Czech reached the quarterfinal, after opponent Marco Chiudinelli retired with a lower back injury.

World No. 432 Dmitry Tursunov secured a quarterfinal berth, having outlasted former finalist Richard Gasquet on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Russian, back to competition after three left ankle surgeries, came through, 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-4, in two hours and four minutes. Tursunov extended his abbreviate ATP World Tour season record to 3-5.
The Russian will face either World No. 1 Rafael Nadal or qualifier Milos Raonic in the next round.
