John Isner and Nikolay Davydenko win their second-round matches in Beijing on Wednesday. They defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber and Marin Cilic, respectively.
(WC) John Isner d. Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3
Isner fired 20 aces past Kohlschreiber to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open after two hours and 12 minutes of play on Wednesday. Both players had chances in the opening set, but Isner missed one break point early and Kohlschreiber failed to capitalize on three late chances as a tiebreaker had to decide things. The 6'9'' American secured a quick mini-break, held his serve en route to 6-3, and took advantage of a Kohlschreiber second serve on his first set point.
Although Isner continued to serve well in the second, Kohlschreiber raised his level and struck for the first break of the afternoon. The German fought off three break points to consolidate it and forced a decisive third frame of play. In the end, however, Isner's serve proved to be the difference. The world No. 22 lost only six points in his last five service games and used one break to serve out the proceedings at 5-3. Next up for Isner is Nikolay Davydenko.
(4) Nikolay Davydenko d. Marin Cilic 7-5, 7-5
Davydenko earned the 400th ATP victory of his career on Wednesday, taking out Cilic in one hour and 53 minutes. The Russian served horribly, double-faulting four times without striking an ace while putting in just 55 percent of his first deliveries, but he made up for it by abusing his opponent's second serves.
Both sets progressed in similar fashion, with a pair of breaks being exchanged en route to 5-5. Cilic, however, constantly had the disadvantage of serving from behind and he faltered each time at 5-6. The 6'6'' Croat was doomed by winning a mere 38 percent of his second-serve points.
