(2) Andy Roddick def. (WC) Tatsuma Ito 6-4, 6-3
Second seed Andy Roddick reached round two after taking out hometown hope Tatsuma Ito in straight sets. The 28-year-old American, in his first match since the US Open, struck eight aces en route to an 83-minute victory. Roddick secured 24 of 28 of his first-serve points, having extended his season record to 41-11.
"[There were] some good things today and some that were inconsistent," said Roddick. "Since New York I have been working on my fitness a lot. He played very well in the first set, he hits very hard and flat and the surface is fast, so it was a bit uncomfortable at the beginning."
Roddick will battle Jeremy Chardy in the round of 16. The Frenchman took out qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round, 6-3, 7-6(2).
Jarkko Nieminen def. (3) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 5-7, 6-1
An in-form Jarkko Nieminen continued his solid hard-court effort with a three-set ousting of defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Finn withstood 14 aces through two hours of competition. The 29-year-old converted four of 14 break chances to seal a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victory.
Tsonga, back from a serious left knee injury he sustained at Wimbledon, explained, "I did all I could but it was not enough today. It was tough, my first match in three months, and Jarkko played well. But I have no pain in my knee, so that is positive."
Nieminen is slated to meet Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the next round. The Spaniard downed Eduardo Schwank in the opening round, 6-4, 6-4.
