Robin Soderling beats Tommy Robredo in three sets on Tuesday night in Beijing. Soderling is joined in the second round by David Ferrer, who beat Denis Istomin.
(3) Robin Soderling d. Tommy Robredo 4-6, 6-1, 6-4
Soderling overcame a slow start to defeat Robredo in one hour and 49 minutes and advance to the second round of the China Open on Tuesday. Robredo came out firing and one break was enough for the Spaniard in set one because he did not face a single break point. After serving out the opening frame of play at 5-4, however, Robredo could not maintain the momentum.
Soderling raced through the second, although he did have to fight off four break points. Beijing's No. 3 seed still managed to consolidate both of his breaks before closing it out at 5-1. Robredo also had chances in the third, but he missed break-point opportunities in two different games, including at 4-5. Soderling survived a final tough service hold to set up a meeting with Nicolas Almagro.
(8) David Ferrer d. Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-1
While Mikhail Youzhny and Andrey Golubev suffered early exits in Beijing shortly after reaching the Kuala Lumpur final, Ferrer had no such letdown. The 11th-ranked Spaniard, who lost to Golubev in the semifinals last weekend, cruised past Istomin in just one hour and three minutes on Tuesday.
Istomin made things relatively interesting in set one, but the 44th-ranked Uzbek was absolutely hopeless against Ferrer's serve. Ferrer dropped only three points in his first five service games before running away with the match in the second set. The No. 8 seed saved four break points--all in the same game--but never lost control and broke at 5-1 to finish off the match in style. Next up for Ferrer is Yen-Hsun Lu.
