Mikhail Youzhny and Marcos Baghdatis are upset in Beijing on Tuesday. They suffer first-round exits at the hands of Ivan Ljubicic and Aleksandr Dolgopolov, respectively.
Two days after winning the Kuala Lumpur title, Mikhail Youzhny could not recover in time for a similar performance at the China Open. Youzhny lost his first-round match 6-3, 7-6(3) to Ivan Ljubicic in one hour and 45 minutes on Tuesday.
Although Ljubicic did not put in a high percentage of first deliveries, he still managed to serve his way to victory. The veteran Croat fired seven aces in the first set and fought off one break point before serving it out at 5-3.
Youzhny finally managed to earn a break in the second and he eventually forced a tiebreaker, but his opponent's serve once again proved to be the difference. Ljubicic, who added eight more aces in set two, raced through the decider seven points to three for his first victory since a clay-court event in Umag three months ago.
Marcos Baghdatis was also upset in first-round action on Tuesday, falling to Aleksandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes. Dismal serving characterized the match, with Baghdatis putting in 41 percent of his first offerings and Dolgopolov putting in 48 percent. Both men won fewer than half of their second-serve points.
In the end, however, Dolgopolov was slightly better in each set. The 21-year-old Ukrainian donated serve three times but made up for it with five breaks of his own. He broke Baghdatis at 5-4 in both the first and the second to clinch the victory. Dolgopolov and Ljubicic will square off on Thursday for a place in the quarterfinals.
