    Tokyo - Stepanek advances, Gulbis crashes out Radek Stepanek is through to the second round at the Japan Open, after rallying to oust Alejandro Falla in three sets. Seventh seed Ernests Gulbis fell to Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets.

    Radek Stepanek def. Alejandro Falla 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5)

    World No. 37 Radek Stepanek fought his way into the second round, having rallied to upend Alejandro Falla, 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). The Czech veteran, through in two hours and 50 minutes of competition, secured 70% of his second-serve points in the deciding set. The 31-year-old leveled his 2010 season record to 11-11.

    Stepanek will play either eighth seed Michael Llodra or Marco Chiudinelli in the second round.

    Dmitry Tursunov def. (7) Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4

    World No. 432 Dmitry Tursunov advanced, following his 6-3, 6-4 success over seventh seed Ernests Gulbis. The 27-year-old Russian, back in action after multiple ankle surgeries, held 10 service games without facing a break point. Despite tallying 11 aces, Gulbis struggled on serve with four doubles and 38% of second-serve points won.

    Tursunov meets either Thiemo De Bakker or Richard Gasquet in the round of 16.
