John Isner advanced to the second round of the China Open, but countryman Sam Querrey and No. 6 seed Fernando Verdasco were both upset.
Philipp Kohlschreiber def. Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 7-5
Fernando Verdasco's on-court woes continued on Monday night in Beijing. The Spaniard lost in straight sets to German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber. The loss marks the second straight tournament in which Verdasco failed to win a single match. He was ousted in his first match against Benjamin Becker last week in Bangkok.
Kohlschreiber played well, but Verdasco played uninspired tennis especially in the first set. Kohlschreiber's backhand did the most damage and the German earned a pair of service breaks as a reward.
Verdasco picked up his game in the second set, though just briefly. The Spaniard secured the first service break, but quickly gave it back. Kohlschreiber broke for a second time as Verdasco was serving to force a tiebreaker.
Gilles Simon def. Sam Querrey 6-3, 3-6, 6-2
The draw was not kind to Sam Querrey. The American ran into an in-form Gilles Simon of France, who came into the tournament off his first title of 2010 in Metz. The match was full of service breaks, 12 in total. Querrey, though known for his big serving was broken a surprising seven times in the match, Simon five.
The win marks the 6th consecutive match victory for the Frenchman. He will take on Michael Berrer, who upset Tomas Berdych, in the second round.
John Isner def. Tsung-hua Yang 7-5(5), 6-3
John Isner hit a relatively low 11 aces in his first-round match against Chinese wildcard Tsung-hua Yang. Still, the American faced no break points en route to his straight-set victory.
Yang was able to keep pace with Isner in the first set. The Chinese man fought off two break points to force a tiebreaker. Isner, with his massive first serve, took control of the tiebreaker and the lead. With Yang under control, Isner secured a pair of service breaks in the second set to advance routinely to the second round.
