Four-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier could have the inside track on replacing the departing Patrick McEnroe as American Davis Cup captain.
Inside Tennis magazine quotes insiders as giving Courier the edge over rival candidates Todd Martin and Brad Gilbert, also former players. Courier was not shy about showing his interest only a day or so after McEnroe announced a month ago that he was stepping down.
Courier has experience as a player for the team in the 1990s and has said he is keen to take the job if offered. "Davis Cup means the world to me. And at some point in my life I certainly hope to have that seat. I’m definitely interested in the job, so hopefully they’ll give me a call and we’ll chat about it.”
The 40-year-old has recently been working with his own senior tour as well as doing occasional broadcasting at Grand Slams. The new captain will need to be named in plenty of time for the US visit to Chile in the Davis Cup first round in March, 2011.
