Mikhail Youzhny takes out Igor Andreev in three sets on Friday in Kuala Lumpur. Next up for Youzhny is the final against Andrey Golubev, who defeated David Ferrer.
Mikhail Youzhny won his third straight three-setter of the week on Saturday, overcoming Igor Andreev 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 in Saturday's Malaysian Open semifinals. Youzhny needed one hour and 38 minutes to dismiss his fellow Russian and set up a title match against Andrey Golubev.
Andreev, who qualified just to get into the main draw before reaching the semis, continued his fine form in the first set. The world No. 102 completely dominated the opening frame of play, losing just four points in four service games and break his opponent twice.
Youzhny, though, appeared to treat that as a minor wakeup call. The ninth-ranked Russian stormed to victory from there, refusing to drop even a single game in the second set. Andreev managed to win a pair of service games in the third, but Youzhny only became more dominant on serve. Kuala Lumpur's No. 4 seed won 16 of18 service points in the third set as he served out the proceedings at 5-2.
Golubev took out a seed for the second consecutive round, upending David Ferrer 7-5, 7-6(4) one day after dismantling Robin Soderling in straight sets. The eighth-seeded Kazakh won 73 percent of both his first and second-serve points to advance after one hour and 46 minutes.
Ferrer surrendered serve twice, at 5-5 in each set. Golubev successfully served out the first, but he was broken for the first time all day while trying to finish off the match in the second. Nonetheless, the world No. 41 once again took control with his power game and prevailed in the tiebreaker seven points to four.
