Mikhail Youzhny comes back from a set down to beat Marcos Baghdatis in the Kuala Lumpur quarterfinals on Friday. Youzhny is set for an all-Russian semifinal against Igor Andreev.
Mikhail Youzhny battled back from a set and a break deficit to overcome Marcos Baghdatis 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open on Friday afternoon. Youzhny needed two hours and 40 minutes to book a spot in his fifth semifinal of the year and second consecutive, having reached the last four at the U.S. Open.
For more than half the match, however, it looked like Baghdatis would the one to maintain fine form and advance. The sixth-seeded Cypriot served poorly in the opening set, but he won far more free points on his first serve than his opponent, and that proved to be the difference in a tense tiebreaker. Baghdatis took care of his serve at 6-5 in the 'breaker to seize a one-set advantage.
The world No. 18 appeared to be off to the races in the second frame of play, as he took a 4-2 lead. Youzhny, though, broke back for 3-4 and eventually took a 6-5 lead. The ninth-ranked Russian struck for another break to end the set and force a third.
Having thrown away an opportunity to win the match in straights, Baghdatis went away quietly in the third. He donated serve twice and never got a look at a break point. Youzhny won 14 of 17 first-serve points in the final set and coasted the rest of the way to victory, clinching it with a hold at 5-1.
Kuala Lumpur's No. 4 seed converted seven of 11 break chances to set up a semifinal meeting with Igor Andreev. Youzhny's fellow Russian held off Milos Raonic 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the first quarterfinal.
