Golubev stuns Soderling, Ferrer outlasts Berdych No. 1 seed Robin Soderling is out of the Kuala Lumpur tournament, losing to Andrey Golubev in Friday's quarterfinals. David Ferrer advances with a three-set win over Tomas Berdych.

Andrey Golubev shocked Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open on Friday, and he did it in convincing fashion. Golubev handled the No. 1 seed 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and 11 minutes.

A renowned indoor hard-court player, Soderling was off his game right from the start. The fifth-ranked Swede served at a mere 43 percent in the first set while winning only 38 percent of his second-serve points. He donated serve twice, including at 3-5 to throw away the opening frame of play.

From there it was full steam ahead for Golubev, who fought off three break points in the first but lost just four points in his last four service games. Two breaks were more than enough for the 41st-ranked Kazakh as he went on to serve out the proceedings at 5-2.

Next up for Golubev in the semifinals is David Ferrer, who came through a thriller against Tomas Berdych after two hours and 28 minutes. A high-quality encounter saw Ferrer survive a flurry of momentum shifts before winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Berdych came out hot and lost only three points in his first five service games. One break was enough for the seventh-ranked Czech to serve out the opening set at 5-4. Although Berdych's level hardly dropped, Ferrer took care of his serve en route a 6-5 lead in the second.

That's when the tide turned, with Ferrer breaking to force a third set. The 11th-ranked Spaniard fell behind by a break at 3-4 in the second, but he broke right back and ended up winning the last three games. The end of the match did not do it justice, as a Berdych double-fault at 4-5 gave the win to Ferrer.

"It was a very good match for me, perhaps my best of the season," said Ferrer. "I'm happy for that because it was a very tough match."
