  • Nadal makes quick work of Bemelmans

    9/30/10 9:20 PM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal makes quick work of Bemelmans Rafael Nadal breezed into the quarterfinals in Bangkok with an easy straight-set win over Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.

Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal needed just over an hour and 10 minutes to get past Ruben Bemelmans in the Bangkok second round on Thursday. The win marks the 60th for the world No. 1 in 2010. Nadal currently holds a 60-7 match record and with it a stranglehold on the No. 1 ranking.

Bemelmans never had a chance at winning this match. Though Nadal looked a tad rusty on serve, putting in just 58 percent for the match, he never faced a single break point.

The Belgian struggled to win points in the first set; Nadal rolled to a 6-1 lead, losing just three points on serve along the way.

The second set was much better from Bemelmans, as he began to use the speed of the court to hit winners. Nadal was forced to work a bit harder, but the Spaniard still secured a break at 4-4 to close the proceedings in straight sets.

Nadal will be back on Friday night to take on Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.

Verdasco is out, so I don't see Rafa losing this tournament.

what does Verdasco losing have anything to do with Nadal winning the tournament?

I've seen the last two games on youtuve.. Rafa closed it out firmly, few aces but unretournable serves which are just as good... I think he missed an easy forehand cross-court winner at 5-4 on his serve, close to the net to set up match point .. and Bemelmans couldn't help laughing to himself :) Nadal was like, how the f* did I miss this? lol
