Nikolay Davydenko's loss as top seed at the Malaysian Open could pave the way for the Russian's exit from the ranking Top 10 only a year after the 29-year-old made a huge comeback to the game.
Davydenko exited in his opening match in Kuala Lumpur to fellow Russian and qualifier Igor Andreev, complaining about the tennis balls more than his own form.
But the world No. 6 is on a slippery slope, with calculations showing that should he lose early at the Shanghai Masters starting in just over a week, then he will fall form the elite ATP grouping.
Davydenko, who had a red-hot autumn a year ago with titles in Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai over a three-week span, also won the year-end World Tour Finals in London against Juan Del Potro in a fairytale end to his season.
But he knows the situation has now changed after coming back in June with indifferent form after a broken wrist: "If I can't defend in Shanghai, I'll drop out of the top ten," he admitted.
