Kuala Lumpur's defending champion is out after just one match, as Nikolay Davydenko goes down to Igor Andreev on Wednesday. Fellow Russian Mikhail Youzhny joins Andreev in the quarterfinals.
(Q) Igor Andreev d. (2) Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3
Davydenko, the defending champion of the Malaysian Open, lost his opener to Andreev in two hours and 47 minutes on Wednesday night. This all-Russian affair was tense right from the start, as one break of serve each was exchanged en route to a first-set tiebreaker. Andreev pulled it out seven points to five, winning six points in a row after trailing 5-1.
Davydenko also blew a huge lead in the second as his underdog opponent battled back from 5-1 down to tie it at 5-5. The world No. 6, though, recovered to break at 5-5 before serving it out to force a third. In the final set, Andreev took control by breaking for a 4-2 advantage. He made no mistake in finishing it off, holding serve at both 4-2 and 5-3 for the win. Andreev finished with seven aces and just one double-fault on his way to a quarterfinal matchup against Milos Raonic.
(4) Mikhail Youzhny d. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 5-7, 7-5
In their only previous meeting this summer at the Toronto Masters, Dolgopolov upset Youzhny 7-5 in the third. This time, though, Youzhny turned the tables and prevailed 7-5 in the third after one hour and 54 minutes to reach the Malaysian Open second round. For a while it looked like the ninth-ranked Russian would advance in much easier fashion, as he lost a mere three points in his first four service games and used two breaks to dominate the opening set.
Dolgopolov recovered for an early break in the second and although he gave it back at 5-3, he clinched the set with a break at 6-5. The 55th-ranked Ukrainian continued to go toe-to-toe with his favored opponent in the third, but he finally cracked at 5-5 when Youzhny struck for his third break of the match. Kuala Lumpur's No. 4 seed made no mistake in serving out the proceedings to set up a quarterfinal clash with Marcos Baghdatis.
