David Ferrer beats Bernard Tomic in straight sets on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur. Ferrer is joined in the second round by Marcos Baghdatis and Denis Istomin.
(5) David Ferrer d. (WC) Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-4
Ferrer converted five of 14 break chances to see off Tomic in one hour and 39 minutes in the opening round of the Malaysian Open on Wednesday. The 11th-ranked Spaniard donated his own serve once in the first set, but he destroyed his opponent's second serves and earned three breaks of his own, including a clincher at 5-3. Tomic raised his level slightly in the second, but the 17-year-old continued to be hopeless whenever he gave Ferrer a look at a second offering. Kuala Lumpur's No. 5 seed broke at 5-4 to set up a second-round meeting with another wild card, Yuki Bhambri.
(6) Marcos Baghdatis d. Santiago Giraldo 7-5, 7-5
Baghdatis made life more difficult on himself than necessary, but he managed to hold off Giraldo in one hour and 44 minutes on Wednesday. After a late break in the first set, the 18th-ranked Cypriot raced to a two-break lead in the second. He had dropped a mere five points in his six service games during the opening frame of play, but out of nowhere he gave both breaks back in set two. Giraldo, however, cracked at the end after his effort to get back on serve, and another late donation of serve by the 22-year-old Colombian lead to his exit. Next up for Baghdatis is No. 4 seed Mikhail Youzhny.
Denis Istomin d. Marsel Ilhan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4
Istomin fired 10 aces without double-faulting to book a spot in the Kuala Lumpur second round after one hour and 49 minutes of play on Tuesday. The 43rd-ranked Uzbek got off to a dreadful start, winning just 36 percent of his first-serve points in the opening set while winning only five points in four return games, but he turned it around in sets two and three. Istomin needed one break in each of the final two sets before serving them out in style. Ilhan put in just 50 percent of his first serves and finished with four aces and three doubles, while Istomin moves on for a showdown with third-seeded Tomas Berdych.
