Marcos Baghdatis makes quick work of Kei Nishikori on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur. Next up for Baghdatis is a second-round meeting with Santiago Giraldo.
Marcos Baghdatis kicked off his Malaysian Open campaign in lightning-quick fashion on Tuesday as he routed Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes. Baghdatis fired eight aces and double-faulted only once en route to setting up a second-round clash against Santiago Giraldo.
The 18th-ranked Cypriot broke serve three times in the first set, including at 5-1 to finish it off in style. The second frame of play was even more lopsided, as a reeling Nishikori won only nine points after earning 17 in set one.
"It was a great match," said Baghdatis. “I played really good tennis. I'm happy with the way I played and I'm happy I won. Nishikori is a very talented player; he's beaten some good players this year. But I played really well and didn’t give him any chances and I'm very happy about that."
Also advancing on Tuesday were Alexandr Dolgopolov and Milos Raonic. Dolgopolov dismissed Laurent Recouderc 6-3, 6-1 and will next face No. 4 seed Mikhail Youzhny. Raonic recorded his first career ATP win by taking out Igor Kunitsyn 7-6(6), 6-3. The 19-year-old Canadian will battle seventh-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky for a place in the quarterfinals.
