  • Verdasco headlines bottom half in Bangkok

    9/27/10 1:40 AM | Kelli DeMario
Verdasco headlines bottom half in Bangkok Fernando Verdasco returns to competition this week, seeded second in a group of players ready to commence the southeast Asian swing at the PTT Thailand Open. The world No. 8 is set make his second appearance in Bangkok.

Second seed Fernando Verdasco will kick off his campaign at the 2010 PTT Thailand Open, marking his ATP World Tour return after a quarterfinal loss to compatriot Rafael Nadal at the US Open. The 26-year-old, who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, will be making his second trip to Bangkok, having reached the semifinal in 2007.

Verdasco begins his Asian hard-court effort with a 41-17 season record. The Spaniard is slated to headline the bottom half of the 28-player draw, which includes Nadal, third seed Jurgen Melzer, fourth seed Ernests Gulbis, as well as 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro, back from a months-long absence with a right wrist injury.

The world No. 8 headlines a favorable section of the draw that hosts the veteran Melzer, sixth seed Thiemo De Bakker, and seventh seed Viktor Troicki. Additional competitors in Verdasco’s half include: Benjamin Becker, Daniel Brands, Marco Chiudinelli, Marc Lopez, Illya Marchenko, Jarkko Nieminen, Dudi Sela, Danai Udomchoke, and Mischa Zverev.

After an opening-round bye, Verdasco will take on the winner of Becker vs. Zverev. With passage through the opener, the Madrid native looks toward a likely round of 16 clash with a hard-court capable De Bakker. Should Verdasco move into the quarterfinal, he faces a possible showdown with Melzer or Troicki.
