After a nine-month layoff due to wrist surgery, Juan Martin Del Potro makes his return to tennis at the PTT Thailand Open.
US Open organizers had hoped to get their defending champion back for the 2010 edition, but Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro was forced to wait until this week in Bangkok.
He was unfortunate to draw into current US Open champion Rafael Nadal’s quarter of the draw. The world No. 1 has been in Thailand enjoying a beach vacation and a first round bye, while Del Potro prepares for Olivier Rochus in his first match.
Tournament organizers will surely be hoping to showcase a Del Potro-Nadal quarterfinal, but lack of match play and his untested wrist could put a halt to a rematch of last year’s US Open semifinal, in which Del Potro completely crushed Nadal.
If organizers get their wish though, Nadal will have to be considered the favorite to move into the semifinals. The Spaniard has added a new serving dimension to his game that allowed him to surge to his first-ever US Open crown a few weeks ago.
If seeding holds up, Nadal will face another tough opponent in the semis in the form of Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis. The No. 4 seed has not been enjoying the best form in the past few months, but he is always dangerous.
Prediction – Nadal is the overwhelming favorite to get to the finals from the top half.

@ricky , why were u expecting it thay way with such certainty??
may b because the organizers want a delpo-nadal match and they cant risk this potential match up by keeping delpo in the other section because we know delpo isnt certain to reach the latter stages???

Delpo's first match should be fun (or funny) with he and the diminutive Rochus.

O. Rochus has taken he first set against Delpo - 7.6 (9).
Delpo seems to be playing well, his serve looks as good as ever.

Sorry the score is 7.6 (7) not 9.

O Rachus won 76, 64 , even after Del Potro fired 16 aces with 65 % first serve %
No Del Potro needs to earn in a hard way to get a chance to play with Top players
