The ATP event in Kuala Lumpur once against boasts a stellar field, especially by 250-point tournament standards. Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko, Tomas Berdych, and Mikhail Youzhny are all competing for the title.
It does not have the intriguing star power of Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro in Bangkok, but this week's Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur is arguably the strongest and deepest 250-point ATP tournament of the entire season.
Four of the top nine players in the world (almost unheard of for a 250-pointer) will be in action, as French Open runner-up Robin Soderling and 2009 World Tour Finals winner Nikolay Davydenko lead the way as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively. Tomas Berdych is seeded third, while Mikhail Youzhny owns the other first-round bye as the No. 4 seed.
Soderling and Berdych are in the same half of the draw and would face each other in the semifinals, in what would be rematch of their French Open semi (Soderling won in five sets). Both players first have to win two matches, and for Berdych that could be especially difficult. The seventh-ranked Czech could open against an in-form Denis Istomin before a potential quarterfinal clash with No. 5 seed David Ferrer.
While Davydenko appears to have a friendly path in the final section of the bracket, Youzhny is not as fortunate. The ninth-ranked Russian is likely to meet Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round and he could run into No. 6 seed Marcos Baghdatis as early as the quarterfinals. Baghdatis, however, is set for a tricky opening-round showdown with Kei Nishikori.
Sergiy Stakhovsky and Andrey Golubev round out the seeded field at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Stakhovsky, who won the New Haven title before reaching the third round of the U.S. Open, will play Michael Russell on Monday in Davydenko's quarter of the draw. Golubev, who won the Hamburg title earlier this season, begins against Yen-Hsun Lu as part of Soderling's top section.
