Gilles Simon wins the Metz title on Sunday, easing past Mischa Zverev in straight sets. It is the seventh title of Simon's career.
Gilles Simon is winless no more in Metz. That includes matches and titles.
Simon, who came in with an 0-4 lifetime match record at this event, won the Open de Moselle on Sunday by routing Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-2. The Frenchman fired nine aces and never dropped, capturing his first ATP title of the season in only one hour and seven minutes.
Zverev, who qualified just to get into the main draw, was relatively competitive during the first set. The 155th-ranked German saved two break points at 1-2 to stay on serve, but Simon struck for a 4-2 lead when Zverev netted an ill-advised drop-shot. Simon served out the set the rest of the way, fighting off one break point at 4-2 with an ace.
From there it was all over for Zverev, who won took care of his first two service games in the second set before losing the last five games of the match. The underdog won only four return points in the second set as Simon raced to victory.
"I am extremely happy," said Simon. "Because I had been playing well, also in the Davis Cup preparation, I really wanted to try to compete and really wanted to come to Metz. I knew I could do something good."
"I was really excited to be in my first final, but he played really well," Zverev explained. "Not only solid from the baseline as he is usually, but also aggressive as well. He served unbelievably. I couldn’t do much today."
This is Simon's seventh career ATP title, while Zverev was competing in his first final.
