Fourth seed Juan Ignacio Chela won his second ATP World Tour title of the season on Sunday, having defeated final opponent Pablo Andujar in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. The veteran added career title No. 6 to his resume at the BCR Open.
Veteran Juan Ignacio Chela secured a second clay-court crown this year, following his straight-set dismissal of qualifier Pablo Andujar. The 31-year-old Argentine, also victorious in doubles with partner Lukasz Kubot, converted five of six break chances through one hour and 29 minutes of play.
Sunday’s championship victory signals title number two for Chela in 2010, adding to an earlier successful run on clay in Houston (def. Querrey).
Chela twice rallied from a set down in the opening set, then pocketed a key service break at 6-5. The world No. 53 enjoyed an easier second set, earning breaks of serve in both the second and sixth games.
The BCR Open champion explained, post-victory:
"It was an unbelievable week winning in both singles and doubles. I didn't expect that. The beginning of the season was pretty tough for me so I'm very happy that I'm playing at such a great level now. I enjoy the circuit a lot.
I always used to be quiet on court, but now I have even more experience and that helps especially when you prepare for an important match. My goal is to do well during the Asian swing as well as in the European indoor events and try to finish the year in the Top 30."
