2007 Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez is due to undergo hip and perhaps knee surgery next month in the US.
Gonzo joins a list of hip surgery patients including Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt and Magnus Norman, 2000 French Open finalist and coach of Robin Soderling
Gonzalez, who lost his Australian open title match to Roger Federer nearly four years ago, has hardily played this season as his condition failed to improve. The 30-year-old has been plagued by knee tendinitis as well as a hip problem.
The one-time No. 5 and winner of 11 career titles had to quit his first-round match at the US Open, did not compete in Wimbledon and won only one round at the French Open. He's set to miss around nine months of tennis as he recovers.
Reports indicate the player will undergo surgery October 4 in New York. The Chilean has played just two matches since the French Open.
