  • Robredo handles Istomin, Gasquet outlasts Mathieu

    9/23/10 4:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Robredo handles Istomin, Gasquet outlasts Mathieu Tommy Robredo and Richard Gasquet take very different routes to the Metz quarterfinals on Wednesday. Robredo cruises past Denis Istomin while Gasquet survives Paul-Henri Mathieu in a third-set tiebreaker.

    (7) Tommy Robredo d. Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-2

Robredo apparently found his game at the U.S. Open, because following a fourth-round performance in New York, he sailed through to the Open de Moselle quarterfinals on Wednesday. The 40th-ranked Spaniard converted all four of his break chances en route to dismissing Istomin in just one hour and 13 minutes.

Although Robredo donated his own serve once in the first set, two breaks of his own were enough to take it 6-4. A disappointing Istomin completely disappeared in the second, as he won a mere five points in four return games. Robredo will face Richard Gasquet for a spot in the semifinals.

    (4) Richard Gasquet d. Paul-Henri Mathieu 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3)

Gasquet did not break serve a single time, but he still had just enough to get past Mathieu in a thrilling all-French affair on Wednesday in the Metz second round. After two hours and 37 minutes of play, Gasquet's 17 aces and his ability to deliver clutch tennis at the key moments proved to the difference. At least that was the case following a first set in which Mathieu converted the only break of the match and dropped just six points in five service games.

While he could never break his opponent's serve, Gasquet managed to force a pair of tiebreakers. The world No. 30 fought off two break points in the second set and two more in the third to stay within striking distance. Mathieu was two points from victory on two different occasions, but the world No. 96 could not match his countryman's standard in the two 'breakers. The two competitors finished with 108 points apiece.
