Nicolas Mahut has not caught many breaks since his marathon Wimbledon loss to John Isner, but Gael Monfils' loss was his gain on Wednesday. Mahut got a lucky loser entry in the Metz main draw when Monfils pulled out.
No. 2 seed Gael Monfils withdrew from the Open de Moselle on Wednesday, citing an abdominal strain. Monfils is the second seeded Frenchman to pull out of the Metz tournament, following No. 5 seed Michael Llodra.
"It hurts when I serve," Monfils explained. "I'll stop for a few days, have a scan and then hopefully come back."
The world No. 15 has been replaced in the main draw by fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, a lucky loser from qualifying. Mahut advanced two rounds over the weekend, but he fell at the final hurdle to Thomas Fabbiano in three sets.
This will be Mahut's third ATP main-draw match since losing to John Isner in the famous first-round Wimbledon match that lasted 11 hours and five minutes before the 6'9'' American prevailed 70-68 in the fifth.
Mahut, ranked 158th in the world, has also struggled at the Challenger level and in qualifiers since Wimbledon. He will look to turn things around on Thursday against Mischa Zverev. Because Monfils had a bye, Mahut is already through to the second round.
