Cilic wins in Metz, Malisse takes out Ljubicic Marin Cilic beats Lukas Lacko on Thursday in Metz. Cilic is through to the quarterfinals where he is joined by Xavier Malisse, an upset winner over Ivan Ljubicic.

    (1) Marin Cilic vs. Lukas Lacko 7-5, 7-6(3)

Cilic kicked off his Open de Moselle campaign in victorious fashion on Thursday afternoon, surviving a stern test from Lacko after one hour and 46 minutes. Only one break of serve was managed throughout the entire match, and it came at 5-5 in the first before Cilic served out the set one game later.

The 14th-ranked Croat fought off one break point in the first and saved two in the second en route to a tiebreaker. Lacko had a more difficult time with his serve, but he staved off all five of his opponent’s break-point opportunities during set two. Still, the underdog Slovak did have enough in the ‘breaker and Cilic took it seven points to three. Next up for Metz’s No. 1 seed is a quarterfinal clash against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
    Xavier Malisse d. (3) Ivan Ljubicic 7-5, 6-2

Malisse never dropped serve as he defeated Ljubicic in one hour and 19 minutes to reach the Metz quarterfinals on Thursday. Although it turned out to be relatively routine, Ljubicic stayed competitive until 5-5 in the opening set. A late break for Malisse was enough to take it because he dropped only six points in his first six service games.

Ljubicic finally had some chance against his opponent's serve in set two, but the 55th-ranked Belgian fought off a lone break point with an ace. The Croat was doomed by poor serving in the second, as he put in just 39 percent of his first serves and did not save any of Malisse's two break points. Malisse fired five aces--seven fewer than the No. 3 seed--en route to a meeting with either Gilles Simon or Igor Sijsling.

At least I see a win for Cilic, after his poor showing at the USO. I hope he is getting back on track and hope he goes deep in this tournament and the next. Go Marin!
