  • Simon, Kohlschreiber advance at Open de Moselle

    9/22/10 2:58 AM | Ricky Dimon
Simon, Kohlschreiber advance at Open de Moselle Gilles Simon and Philipp Kohlschreiber cruise into the Metz second round on Tuesday. They defeat Dustin Brown and Thomas Fabbiano, respectively.

    (8) Gilles Simon d. Dustin Brown 6-3, 6-4

Simon won 23 of 24 first-serve points and never faced a break point as he took out Brands in one hour and one minute on Tuesday evening to reach the second round of the Open de Moselle. The Frenchman seized an early break in the opening set and consolidated it the rest of the way for a quick advantage.

One break was also enough for Simon in set two before he served out the proceedings at 5-4. Brown struck nine aces, but the 118th-ranked Jamaican was out of his league from the baseline. He won 78 of his first-serve points when he was able to take control, but he lost 12 of 18 when he had to make a second delivery. Simon finished with eight aces and one double-fault to set up a meeting with either Thierry Ascione or Igor Sijsling.

    (6) Philipp Kohlschreiber d. (Q) Thomas Fabbiano 6-4, 6-3

Fabbiano did well to qualify in Metz, but it was a different ballgame for the world No. 339 playing in just the second-main draw match of his career. He succumbed to Kohlschreiber in one hour and 13 minutes and never got a look at a single break point. Fabbiano managed to hold serve all but once in the first set before Kohlschreiber served it out at 5-4.

The 31st-ranked German made quicker work of the second set, breaking serve twice while continuing to win his own service games with extreme ease. Kohlschreiber's third break of the night at 5-4 finished off the proceedings in style. The No. 6 seed fired nine aces without double-faulting en route to a second-round encounter with countryman Michael Berrer.
