(7) Tommy Robredo d. Daniel Brands 6-1, 7-6(3)
Robredo, who won the title in his last appearance at this event, advanced to the second round of the Open de Moselle on Monday by seeing off Brands in one hour and nine minutes. The Spaniard took control right from the start, winning all 14 of his first-serve points in the opening frame of play and breaking his opponent twice.
Brands made things far more interesting in the second, and the 6'5'' German even had two set points late. Robredo, however, fought them off and managed to force a tiebreaker. Metz's No. 7 seed cruised through the decider seven points to three to set up a meeting with Denis Istomin. Robredo finished with seven aces and one double-fault, while Brands fired six aces and double-faulted twice.
Denis Istomin d. Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4
A whole host of Frenchmen remain in the tournament, but Istomin made Serra the first French casualty on opening day of main-draw action. Uzbekistan's top-ranked player struck eight aces and advanced to the second round after one hour and six minutes of play. He seized a break of serve early in the first set and made it stand up the rest of the way by refusing to let Serra sniff even one break chance.
Istomin seemed to be en route to a blowout victory when he led by two breaks in the second at 4-1, but he suddenly gave both of them back. Just when Serra had all the momentum at 4-4, however, the world No. 71 donated serve and saw Istomin close out the proceedings one game later. Istomin converted four of five break-point opportunities to help his efforts.
