  • Nadal clinches another year-end No. 1 ranking

    9/17/10 2:56 PM | Johan Lindahl
    Nadal clinches another year-end No. 1 ranking Rafael Nadal will crown his 2010 season by again finishing atop the rankings, with his ascendancy to the throne all in place two months before the official end of the ATP campaign.

    It could well be that the World Tour Finals in London from November 21-28 are a mere formality for the Spaniard, who became the seventh man in history to win all four majors with his US Open title.

    "It has been an incredible season - one of my best ever, if not the best," said Nadal after getting the official news of his achievement. "Winning the US Open together with Roland Garros and Wimbledon, as well as the three back-to-back Masters in Europe, was not easy."

    The 24-year-old Spaniard is looking to eclipse Roger Federer as the king of the game unless the 29-year-old Swiss makes a remarkable - but far from impossible - recovery in form. Nadal now holds six titles this season - half of them Grand Slams, at which he has won his last 21 matches.

    2010 will mark Nadal's second year-end top ranking finish after 2008, when he beat Federer in a classic Wimbledon final to win the first of his two titles there. He will become the third in ranking history to regain a year-ending top spot after Ivan Lendl and Federer.

I like that the writer has noticed different sides of Rafa: <<... right now in the world of sport, Rafa Nadal is the gladiator. ON court he plays like one. OFF court it's as though he keeps a copy of Rudyard Kipling's If in his tennis bag. What an impressive young man he is>>. The poem "IF" was written many years ago (in 1895), but it really seems to be about Rafa !

IF by Rudyard Kipling:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

In this video, my favorite point is between 3:38 -3:47. I laughed loudly at that point when I watched the match live on TV. It was a relief to see how quick Rafa was. Starting with that point I felt that Rafa was the winner of the match.

Augustina08 , 9/18/10 3:11 PM

hehe...quick as a cheetah

vrael , 9/18/10 3:46 PM

Very appropriate Augustina.

another good article"

Well he doesn't have all the facts straight, he says Rafa won AO, FO and USO

SGHIceman , 9/19/10 9:41 AM

It is so great to wake up in the morning acknowledging Rafa's tremendous success....he is bringing so much joy and happiness to his fans...I have been busy and away on business trip right after the USO but I at least was able to read your posts and enjoy the happy times with all of you...I have been tracking what Rafa has been up to and I so enjoy how the people of Spain greeted him at the Real Madrid's football match...Rafa seemed to be so touched with the way they honored him and so truly happy...My heart is full of pride...last year at these times I was concerned about his health and his confidence...this year his health is perfect and his mental strength is so high...keep up like this Rafa! We still have the WTF to win!!! :))

Once again I want to congratulate all Rafa?s fans! You guys all earned these precious and prestigious times of joy and happiness! It hasn?t been easy for us, particularly after his lost to Bagdy, and all these discouraging predictions for the USO. But once again Rafa proved to all skeptics that he is the real pretender for the GOAT title!!!

Vamos Rafa!!!

<<Thailand has given Rafael Nadal a welcome more suitable for royalty than a tennis player upon his arrival for a tournament in Bangkok. /---/ Nadal was greeted with flower garlands at the airport and was led through throngs of reporters by tennis officials and police. /---/ After a few days at a beach resort, Nadal will meet Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and visit Parliament next week before turning to tennis>> [The Ass. LOL mara!
Hopefully this documentary will make it up to you:

Mostly in Rafa's native tongue but I bet you can get the gist of it.

grafight , 9/22/10 3:27 PM

Rafa looks so embarrassed being treated like royalty, I bet he would just like to slip away unnoticed and get to his hotel to go on his play station.
