It's no surprise that Roger Federer is missing from a Swiss Davis Cup World group relegation match for the first time in six years after his semifinal heartbreak at the US Open
Every September since 2004, Federer has come to the rescue of the team by playing - and helping to win - a tie to keep the nation on Davis elite status.
But this weekend in Kazakhstan, he won't be on deck, leaving the team now headed by Stan Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli to fend on its own. Federer's official reason, detailed on his website, was exhaustion. "I've decided not to join the Davis Cup team to Kazakhstan," said the world No. 3.
"I need some extra time to relax after the intense weeks in North America so I can finish the year strongly." The Swiss lost in the first round 4-1 to defending champion, which was itself eliminated in the quarterfinals by France.
Federer has a Davis Cup record of 37-11 overall in singles and doubles. Joining US Open semifinalist Wawrinka and Federer's good friend Chiudinelli are Michael Lammer and Yves Allegro.
Federer's longtime coach/adviser Severin Luthi will lead his men to the east in hopes of staying in the top grouping. "Of course, we would have liked to have had Roger for this match, but we were prepared for this possibility. I'm happy that Stan is in such excellent form."

The thing is, it's not a given that he would have come to the rescue. It's not a gaurantee that Federer will win against anyone anymore.

Can't take anything for granted in a DC away match! But the Old Man of the Mountains needs his rest. Frankly, I'm kinda grateful that Spain lost in the quarters so that Rafa didn't have to suit up this weekend.

Hey, plz dont forget that Fed is now a family man and he has an obligation to them FIRST!!! As time goes we may find that he will be spending more and more time away from the tennis courts!

Some of you posters are pretty unkind towards Federer. he's baled out the Swiss team almost every year. So why is he being condemned for not playing this year? sheesh
A few months ago, all we heard that of the top 4 only the Joker was playing. How many years has he played DC as opposed to some of the other Top 10 payers?? sheesh.

7. Out of the 7 years that he's been a pro. Do your research, Von.

Stu: I'm talking about Fed playing in the world group. He's played for many years and gotten the Swiss team to be able to play the first tie in the DC competition. I mentioned this because the thread is relevant to the world group playoff, (not the playing of the ties, a chickens before eggs, kinda scenario) which a team has to play, to even have a chance at playing the ties.
PS, I've not done any research, I speak from just being a close follower of Davis cup. Fed helps the Swiss team to get into the playoffs, and then he leaves. At least he gives them a fighting chance. It's not easy for a player to have to carry the team on his back most of the time, especially if davis cup os not their main folcus.

Though it apologizes to Stan and other players. Switzerland's player is too few. When Roger participates. It relies on Roger too much.
The final 2003 of Switzerland and Australia was also. Roger was participating all. And, after had come in 1st place, he decreased participation.
Though he participated after defeated at Del potro last year. Switzerland won. But, tournament absence after that however. Masters 1000 + tournament 500. The reason is a pain and tiredness of the body. might be more severer today. I wish, the good young players in Switzerland to increase.
