  • Czechs travel to Serbia for Davis Cup semis

    9/16/10 6:29 PM | Ricky Dimon
Czechs travel to Serbia for Davis Cup semis Novak Djokovic will be back in action just four days after finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the U.S. Open. His Serbian Davis Cup teams is set to host a semifinal showdown against the Czech Republic.

Serbia will be looking for a spot in its first ever Davis Cup final when it takes the court this weekend in Belgrade. The Serbs are hosting a Czech Republic team that is bidding for its second final appearance in as many years.

While past history may favor the Czechs, Serbia definitely has the edge in terms of current form of its players. Novak Djokovic is coming off a runner-up performance at the U.S. Open, though he will have had just three days of rest in between his loss to Rafael Nadal and his rubber against Radek Stepanek. Janko Tipsarevic stunned Andy Roddick in round two of the Open before falling to Gael Monfils.

Stepanek has been out for most of this season due to both fatigue and injury, and he lost in the first round of the U.S. Open to Julien Benneteau. Tomas Berdych, a French Open semifinalist and the Wimbledon runner-up, also dropped his opener in New York, losing in straight sets to Michael Llodra.

Berdych will face Tipsarevic in Friday's second singles rubber.

The current nominees for doubles on the Serbian side are Nenad Zimonjic and Victor Troicki, while the Czech Republic is countering with Jan Hajek and Ivo Minar in the absence of Viktor Troicki. However, the only way Hajek and Minar would ever have a chance of playing is if the Czechs lead 2-0 after Friday's singles. Captain Jaroslav Navratil said he is 99 percent sure that Berdych and Stepanek will also play doubles.

Should the fourth and fifth singles rubbers be live, Djokovic will go up against Berdych prior to a clash between Stepanek and Tipsarevic.
