  • US Open - Djokovic defeats lackluster Monfils for semifinal berth

    9/9/10 2:11 AM | Cheryl Murray
US Open - Djokovic defeats lackluster Monfils for semifinal berth Novak Djokovic was the first player on Wednesday to find his way into the US Open semifinals. The Serb defeated Gael Monfils of France 7-6(2), 6-1, 6-2.

Novak Djokovic was not forced to do more than play his usual game to defeat an uninspired Gael Monfils. Neither man had a positive differential, with DJokovic striking 38 winners to 50 unforced errors, and Monfils hitting just 17 winners to 37 unforced errors.

The first set was by far the most competitive. Monfils actually drew first blood with a service break for a 2-1 lead, but he couldn’t hold onto the lead. At 4-3, Djokovic secured a service break of his own to level the set 4-4.

The ensuing tiebreaker was poorly played by Monfils. The Serb jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Monfils managed to win a second point. It was the last time in the match that Monfils was anywhere near competitive.

The second set featured some of the very worst of Monfils. The Frenchman stood well behind the baseline, retrieving shots, sliding around on the court and trying badly performed trick shots. By the third set, Monfils spent far too many points actually falling to the court.

Djokovic awaits the winner of Robin Soderling and Roger Federer in the semifinals.

I love it how whenever Novak gets a relatively easy win over a supposed threat of an opponent, the opponent was lacklustre, tired, injured etc etc
Give credit where credit is due....

In such tough conditions (today) he was by far a better player and Mofils just couldnt match up to him. The guy just got outplayed.

"Djokovic joined Federer, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe as the only men to reach the US Open semi-finals four years in a row since the Open Era began in 1968."

Impressive!!

bianca , 9/9/10 2:58 AM

bianca, that is mighty impressive company Djokovic is keeping.

smr , 9/9/10 3:31 AM

never in doubt

and i thought this was Delray Beach, not the US Open? :-P

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 3:57 AM

cheryl, the UEs (and low #aces) were because of the wind. altho watching the fed you wouldnt know it...

never in doubt, Ricky? you're the one that had djokovic losing to fish!

stu , 9/9/10 5:30 AM

stu - what does that have to do with anything? Fish is way better than Monfils right now.

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 5:40 AM

Congrats to Nole for the win. Didn't get to see the first set as fallen asleep due to it being early morning here. From what I saw from the second set onwards, Nole did play intelligently by coming forward more frequently and forced Monfils back far behind the baseline.

Fed next for Nole. I hope for a competitive match and hope Nole brings his best to the table. Maybe this time he can have his first win over Fed at the USO? We'll have to wait and see. Go Nole.

Bianca, wow that's great! Pretty incredible.

mriiidula , 9/9/10 8:49 AM

Novak can't get past Federer if both continue to serve like this. Nole has the weakest serve in top 10 maybe even 20. I am not talking about statistics (win on first serve), I am talking about serve winners and easy points. Novak has to work hard to keep his service, and that is harder as he go against better players. That is reason why there is no win over top 10 players this year.

atg , 9/9/10 8:56 AM

Impressive performance by Nole, but there were times when he was acting like an absolute clown when losing points. :D At one point, I was hoping someone would tell him to shut up and play. And on one of his rants directed towards the player box, his dad was at a loss as to what to do, and the look on his face was priceless.

Well, all that aside, let's hope for an inspired performance against Federer. He has it in him to win.

samprallica , 9/9/10 1:36 PM

good win boy, again you have to deal with the swiss master ..good luck to nole and his fans...he should go out there and just throw out everything on fed !

vamosrafa , 9/9/10 1:45 PM

nole did play well, especially to take that first set, but i do think his easy ride in the 2nd and 3rd sets was in part down to monfils just acting like an idiot

he should push federer in the semis though. hoping for a tense 5 settter there :D

Sib69 , 9/9/10 2:06 PM

dear Ricky, you realy can not to writte> Novak was far better player on the court today...all round player...or anything simmilar what is thrue according Novak`s skils...sory for you, seem to me that you have some kind of animus against this very nice person and good player...

marija62 , 9/9/10 3:51 PM

samprallica - initially, I can't stand Nole's antics too but now I get used to them. If Nole by so doing can release and relieve himself of some pressure then why not. Other players have their own antics too. The only thing that I can't stand is players berating the line judges, hauling abuses at them. I think those are simply too much. They are not there for players to vent their anger.

Sib69 - that depends on which Nole shows up - the one of USO 2007, AO 2008 then he has a good chance; otherwise we'll see Fed in the final.

luckystar , 9/9/10 3:51 PM

Antics or no antics, i am Djokovic's fan. What irritates me about the antics is not about how he does them, but why he gets frustrated when there was nothing he could do to control certain points. There is no point getting frustrated when Monfils serves a huge ace, or when the wind plays its tricks. If it is a way of releasing pressure, its fine, but I would rather see him control his emotions and not put so much pressure on himself.

samprallica , 9/9/10 4:03 PM

samprallica - ditto. :)
He seems soo relaxed at his press conference...he was asked about his father's shirt..haha. :D

samprallica, agree with you 100%, but temperament of the balkan heart is a wild animal.

rfzr , 9/9/10 4:27 PM

How could Monfils come without any game plan whatsoever. If he had no plan B, one can still reconcile to his failure, but he had no plan A. The coach was sitting listless. And this was a Grand Slam.

eskay , 9/9/10 5:37 PM

stu - yes, the wind wreaked havoc yesterday...and Nole dealt with it just fine all things considered. But Monfils's antics had nothing to do with the wind. It was a bit ridiculous, if I'm being honest.

Bianca - I have no doubt that if Nole was forced to play well, he probably would have...he's certainly been in good form. But Monfils ended up playing so badly that he didn't need to do anything but let the Frenchman self-destruct.

cherylmurray , 9/9/10 6:01 PM

Monfils's leaping tweener was hilarious. It gives you an idea of just how crazy he can be.

OllyK, thanks for the link. I still can't get over the look on Srjdan's face when Nole went on his most aggressive rant. :D

samprallica , 9/9/10 6:46 PM

His dad's t-shirt is the absolute best part about the US Open. It is just OUTSTANDING! :D

cherylmurray , 9/9/10 6:51 PM

Monfils played brilliantly by his own standards coming into this match. But he just lost my respect for his silly, unprofessional antics when he knew he didn't stand a chance. You just don't give up that easily and then make a fool of yourself in a GS quarter final match. This is where you see the difference between the mediocre players and the top 5 players.
