  • Federer upends Soderling to reach U.S. Open semis

    9/9/10 5:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer upends Soderling to reach U.S. Open semis Roger Federer makes quick work of Robin Soderling in straight sets on Wednesday night at the U.S. Open. Next up for Federer is a semifinal showdown with Novak Djokovic.

Roger Federer beat Robin Soderling in the U.S. Open quarterfinals for a second consecutive year with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 victory on Thursday night. Federer, who survived Soderling in four tight sets in 2009, cruised in far more comfortable fashion to set up a semifinal meeting with Novak Djokovic.

Although Federer got off to a strong start by taking the first set with a single break, Soderling had plenty of chances. The Swede earned three break points in the second game of the match and another in the sixth game, but he could not converted. After fending off the four break opportunities, Federer converted his first with a perfect drop-shot for a 4-3 lead. The world No. 2 took care of his next two service games at love to take the first set.

A disgruntled Soderling lost his way early in the second as he squandered two game points at 1-1 before double-faulting to hand his opponent the break. The No. 5 seed finally seized his first break of the night to get back on serve, but he promptly donated serve once again to put himself in another hole at 3-2. Federer made no mistake with the lead this time, as he dropped only three points on serve the rest of the way in set two.

Soderling raised his level in set three, but Federer matched him shot for shot. The world No. 5 even served to force a fourth at 5-3, but that's when the wheels came off one final time. Federer broke for 4-5, then broke again for 6-5 before finishing off the proceedings with a love service hold and two consecutive aces.

The second-seeded Swiss out-aced Soderling 18-2 to advance in just one hour and 56 minutes. Federer finished with a solid 36 winners to 33 errors in gusty conditions, while an erratic Soderling recorded 16 winners and 32 errors.

No Doubts whatsoever :) What an exhibition of tennis was put on for us!

Hi everybody.. was on a long trip... by the way my friends told me i could be seen during the telecast with a pumped fist after an ace by fed in last set.. blue jacket, red scarf...

FEDistheGOAT , 9/9/10 5:46 AM

What was with those drop shots anyway??! Especially that gorgeous one on breakpoint! the lady next to me almost fainted

FEDistheGOAT , 9/9/10 5:48 AM

Left for office at Ropbin serving down 3-5.
After a while returned home to Roger serving 5-4 in the second frame and back to office for the meeting at 3-3 in the third.
After the meeting it is all over.
That's pretty quick but UE count >30 is awful. He needs to clean up his game a little more. Ricky! you said Fed in four and it was almost, almost correct.

only suspenseful moment of this one was in the post-match interview

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 6:16 AM

@Ricky... the first service game of fed was definitely as tense a moment as anything else fed faced in this tournament.

So what is your pick for Djoker Vs King?

FEDistheGOAT , 9/9/10 6:21 AM

newfang, the conditions were awful man. Balls were whistling around and swerving in the wind. So forget the unforced errors... as the interview lady said, just to serve in that wind is a feat in itself.

please just hand federer the title, no one is beating him.

nadal will get absolutely humiliated in the final.

ATR,

"please just hand federer the title, no one is beating him.

nadal will get absolutely humiliated in the final."

How can anyone doubt nadal guys.He is the world no 1 , 14-7 h2h with Fed beaten him all slam finals(only US missing), yet to drop the serve..He will have a good chance..

Fed still have djoker in his way who is playing well too.

After SFs we can discus who has an edge on other.

impressive federer can play so great in those windy conditions.

croc , 9/9/10 10:07 AM

from federer's press conference:

"
it's not easy you know. you feel everywhere it is blowing... it is blowing through your ears
"

gosh my, i thought federer had some brains!

croc , 9/9/10 11:16 AM

Croc,

Good one :-)

Don't jump the gun FIG, Djoko can only play the king - Nadal, in the final, long way to go yet.

nadline , 9/9/10 1:08 PM

I thought this line from Pete Bodo (of all people) was great:

"The Swiss star, bedecked in a navy blue ensign's suit with white piping, sailed out of Soderling's view quickly."

:}

vintage performance from the swiss master... djokovic is next up , never an easy opponent so again fed would need to perform at his best...but given his record against nole at the open , winning 9/10 sets played , u have got to favor fed surely !

its all heading towards a rog-rafa final

vamosrafa , 9/9/10 1:47 PM

vamosrafa-This match reminded me of why federer has always done well against big hitters. he was simply absorbing the pace of sods groundstrokes easily. Djokovic will be a tough test, and if he gets through that,he will most likely have to play nadal and that will be even tougher for him.

tj600 , 9/9/10 2:42 PM

Roger is highly motivated to win his 6th USO title, who wouldn't be, but I also think he is between a rock and a hard place. He'd be worried that if he met Rafa in the final, he might run the risk of Rafa adding to his h2h against him and getting the Federer slam. At the same time, if they met and he beats Rafa, he can say their h2h would have been better for him if Rafa had made more GS finals on h/c.

Roger played very well against Robin, and I didn't mind sitting up to watch it, because normally I would think, what's the point he is going to just sail through anyway. Now that Roger is being challenged, he is much more fun to watch - IMO.

nadline , 9/9/10 3:18 PM

tj, I think the wind plays a part in the match and affected the way Sod played. Sod didn't 'dare' to go all out and hit his forehand as hard as possible, like he did at the FO this year. He won't dare to 'paint the lines' with his forehand for fear that the wind might affect its precision in placement. Also, his serves were definitely affected. Under such conditions, Fed had the upper hand as he could deal with the wind better than Sod did. Despite all these, the score was close and Sod did break Fed a few times, though Sod couldn't hold on to his serves either. If under normal conditions, I would expect Sod to fare better, he might be able to take a set or who knows, might push the match to five sets before losing.

Fed in the past could deal with the big hitters because he simply moved faster than them and could stop them from playing their game. Now that he is older, a step or two slower, he has difficulty in stopping them from playing their power game. Delpo, Sod and Berdych have shown us that they can hit through him with their power shots. I think going forward, they may beat Fed more often than he beats them and I think that is a natural process as these players are reaching their prime while Fed is declining.

i predict a beatdown given to nadal sometime this tournament likes he always gets one.

no way in hell is nadal winning this title.
book it.
i'll bet my life on it.

Rafael Nadal will win the U.S. Open - http://www.tennistalk.com/en/blog/Ricky_Dimon/20100909/Rafael_Nadal_wi ll_win_the_U.S._Open

The two most lousy things I hate to read and see in tennistalk and on tenniscourts respectively, are "h2h" and the "double handed backhan.

Come on gyes and dames grow up.
