Lleyton Hewitt has again answered the call for Australia and will lead the side in an attempt to return to the Davis Cup World Group through a tie next weekend in Cairns against Belgium.
The tropical venue four hours flying time north of Melbourne will host a tie for the first time, with Hewitt leading a team comprising Carsten Ball, Peter Luczak, and Paul Hanley.
All of the Aussies lost early at the US Open, giving the side time to acclimate to the time change from New York. Australia could return to the elite for the first time in three years with a victory.
"We are confident that we have a good strong team capable of winning our way back into the World Group," said captain John Fitzgerald. "We have been building toward this tie all year and will be well and truly ready to go by the time we hit Cairns."
Hewitt, 29, could likely expect to do duty in both singles and doubles, with teammate Chris Guccione left off the side due to poor recent form after an injury comeback.
Hanley will be expected to carry the doubles load with a partner to be determined. "We know that Paul's very adaptable with anybody and the doubles facet is going to be really important here," said coach Todd Woodbridge. "He and Lleyton played in the tie we played against Belgium in Belgium (in 2007) and played a very good match and, although we lost the tie, won against Olivier Rochus and Kristof Vliegen.
Australia beat Japan 5-0 in the Asia Oceania Group Davis Cup in May to progress to the key World Group play-off.
