Fernando Verdasco advanced to the quarterfinal at the US Open, after rallying to outlast fellow Spaniard David Ferrer. The eighth seed recorded a 5-7, 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4) victory Tuesday evening.
World No. 8 Fernando Verdasco made the final eight in New York, following his dramatic come-from-behind win against 10th-seeded compatriot David Ferrer. The 26-year-old dug out of a two-set deficit to post a five-set victory in four hours and 22 minutes. With the round of 16 win, Verdasco is through to his second consecutive US Open quarterfinal.
After splitting the first two sets, Verdasco trailed by a service break at 2-4. The eighth seed fought back, striking a powerful forehand winner to level at 3-4. Both players held their service games to force a tie break.
A forehand miss from Verdasco gave Ferrer a 3-1 advantage. The 28-year-old increased his lead to 4-1, aided by a sharp second-service return. Verdasco upped his ground game to secure five consecutive points. Two match points came quickly for the World No. 8, who sealed the match with a forehand winner.
Verdasco completed the evening with 73 winners and 16 aces.
He will face either top seed Rafael Nadal or 23rd seed Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinal.

Poor Ferrer, this is the third time I see him losing five sets epic matches this year. I hope he'll be fine after this. One consolation about this USO for him is that he'll be back to top ten again.
Congrats to Verdasco for winning this epic match, for hanging in tough after a two sets deficit, and yes what an epic match point! Good for him that he retains his ranking points and thus remains in the top ten.

Ferrer knows how to lose from a winning position. In crunch situations, one practices what one knows best.

epic match tonight; both players fought and I was surprised that Fernando fought back to win after being down 2 sets. In past he wasn't as strong mentally in matches. Hard to pick a winner; I like them both. The best man won of course; that is how it goes.

I watched this match partly. I only say that Spaniards play entertaining tennis. It's joy to watch them.

We can all learn something from Verdasco from his courageous effort and fighting spirit. He didn't give up when he was 2 sets down nor when he was 4-1 down in the tiebreak. When all seems bleak and your opponent thinks you've given up, don't give up!
