Andy Murray's search for a new coach may take on additional urgency after his early exit in the US Open third round to Stanislas Wawrinka.
Former coach Brad Gilbert - never short an opinion in his role as television sideline commentator - has chimed in with his thoughts about the former pupil. Murray has been going it alone since parting with coach Miles MacLagan in July.
“Whoever Andy ends up with as coach may have one particular task - getting rid of those ghosts from Melbourne (2010 final) and Wimbledon and helping him to move on,” Gilbert told London's Daily Mail.
Murray has stalled in two grand Slam finals, losing the Open in 2008 to Roger Federer and going down badly to the Swiss in Melbourne last January. Gilbert is even putting a timeline on a Murray breakthrough: "It has to got to happen in the next couple of years.
“Andy puts enormous pressure on himself and the longer he goes without a major title the harder it is going to get. You would think that in the next two or three years other hungry, younger Grand Slam contenders are going to emerge as Federer moves into his 30s.”
Gilbert said that the January loss to Federer influences Murray's game to this day. "He produced brilliant tennis to win the Canadian Open in August, but when you turn up at a Grand Slam the whole feel is different and other memories can come crowding in.”

I think a lot of what Gilbert has to say makes sense. I don't know about Andy badly needing a GS title at the present time, but I do agree that he has to shed the disappointment he's suffered from his two GS losses. It's sad, but once that kind of negativity seeps into the mind, it takes a stronghold and it becomes increasingly difficult to shed.
Look at Roddick, every time he plays against Fed, he's a mess, yet he outplayed Fed at Wimby in '09 and still lost. Even though I'm a never say die Roddick fan, I'm having doubts that he might not win a GS as long as Fed is on the other side of the net.
Most might not agree with what Brad's saying, as the truth hurts, but I think he's being spot on that the longer Andy M. takes to win a slam, the harder it will become. His window of opportunity is slowly closing, but he's still got time. I hope he can put aside whatever it is that's holding him back, and win that elusive GS. After the first one, I think he'll win more.

Why is the whole world on Murray's case, there are 95 players in the top 100 who have not won a GS, and they would all like to. Give Murray some slack and room to breathe instead of everyone giving their two-pennies worth on his prospects.
If Bard Gilbert and a host of former players who choose to volunteer their advice had the answers, they would have won a GS themselves. The more they talk about it the more pressure they put on him, and the more uptight he gets.
