Mikhail Youzhny takes out Tommy Robredo in four sets on Tuesday. Youzhny is through to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the second time in his career.
Mikhail Youzhny booked a spot in his second career U.S. Open quarterfinal on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Youzhny, who made a run to the semifinals back in 2006, needed three hours and five minute to set up a meeting with either Stanislas Wawrinka or Sam Querrey.
While Youzhny could have finished the job in straight sets, he just as easily could have found himself down one set to love. Robredo earned one break point in the second game of the match and another in the sixth game while he lost only four points in his first service games. The Spaniard failed to break, however, and it finally cost him at 5-5. Youzhny came out of nowhere for a break thanks to a poor service game by his opponent served out the set one game later without any trouble.
Taking complete control of the proceedings in set two, Youzhny connected on a perfect backhand for a break and a 2-1 lead. The world No. 15 dropped just five points in his four service games during the set on his way to a commanding two-set advantage.
Robredo, however, refused to end his stellar tournament without a fight. The world No. 41, who has been to the fourth round six times now but has never reached the quarters, fought off four break points in the third frame of play before finally breaking serve at 5-4 to extend the match.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the fourth, and Youzhny promptly regained the upper hand. The No. 12 seed missed two break chances at 2-2, but he capitalized on his third opportunity of the game when a backhand return clipped the net cord and dribbled over to Robredo's side for a critical winner. That proved to be the final blow, as Youzhny served out the match the rest of the way. The winner even kissed the net, clearly in tribute to that point, before saluting the crowd.
Youzhny finished with 50 winners and 40 unforced errors, while Robredo wrapped up his effort with 36 winners and 35 mistakes.
