  • Monfils knocks out fellow Frenchman Gasquet

    9/7/10 3:31 AM | Cheryl Murray
Monfils knocks out fellow Frenchman Gasquet France’s Gael Monfils dispatched of his former Davis Cup teammate in straight sets (6-4, 7-5, 7-5) to advance to the quarterfinals against Novak Djokovic.

Gael Monfils won in straight sets, but his countryman Richard Gasquet did not make it easy on him. Gasquet has spent the past year and a half trying to regain the kind of form he enjoyed when he was in the top 10. He showed some of his old flair in this 4th round match, but not enough.

Gasquet got in trouble in his second service game. Monfils had opportunities at 15-40, but Gasquet fought off both break point chances. On Monfils’s third break point chance of the game, however, Gasquet tossed in a double fault to gift the lead and ultimately the set to his countryman.

Monfils turned up the heat in the second set. The No. 17 seed got an immediate service break to take the lead, but Gasquet did not lose heart. At 2-3, he got a single chance to break Monfils’s serve which he secured with an outstanding volley.

It took brilliant play from Monfils to take the opening set. At 5-5, the No. 17 seed set up break point with a brilliant passing shot winner and he took the set off a blistering return.

Despite being down 2 sets to none, Gasquet continued to fight. He drew first blood in the third set after Monfils took an injury time-out. The world No. 37 found his way to 5-2, before Monfils held serve for 3-5. The Gasquet serving for the third set, Monfils got the break back – with the help of another double fault and a pair of errors.

Gasquet was not able to win another game. Monfils moves into the quarterfinals, where he will take on an in-form Novak Djokovic.

I was really surprised at the level of Monfils' focus throughout the match. He looked like a man on a mission to me. He is a fabulous, exciting player and a tremendous athlete, some of his gets were just crazy. Am really looking forward to his match with Nole.

deuce-monfils looked flat out scary at times. if this level of play continues,he has a decent shot against djokovic.

tj: I agree completely. He's got 3 slams as a junior but never realised his potential. He has Andy's problem in that he is too defensive and that's why he has to do so much running, but if he can tweak this, wow! Don't like all the showboating that goes on but such a talent- why he's too marvellous for words!
