    Verdasco, Lopez advance to round of 16 Fernando Verdasco advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, after taking out an in-form David Nalbandian on Sunday. The Spaniard is joined by countryman Feliciano Lopez, who won his match against an injured Sergiy Stakhovsky.

    World No. 8 Fernando Verdasco is through to the round of 16, having recorded a four-set victory over 31st seed David Nalbandian. The Spaniard converted six of 19 break point opportunities through two hours and 46 minutes of play. Verdasco tallied 13 aces and 35 winners on the day. Nalbandian, who falls to 0-2 lifetime against the eighth seed, committed 63 unforced errors during the match.

    Verdasco is slated to square off against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the round of 16. Ferrer downed compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver in round three, 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2.

    (23) Feliciano Lopez def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 4-0 (retired)

    Twenty-third seed Feliciano Lopez made the fourth round following the retirement of opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky. The 28-year-old led by a set and 4-0, when Stakhovsky ended play with a right toe infection. The 24-year-old said he had been suffering since his doubles match on Saturday.

    Lopez will meet World No. 1 Rafael Nadal for a place in the quarterfinal. The top seed dismissed Gilles Simon in the third round, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
