  • Soderling crushes De Bakker, Melzer routs Ferrero

    9/5/10 5:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling crushes De Bakker, Melzer routs Ferrero Robin Soderling and Jurgen Melzer storm into the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Saturday. They earn convincing wins over Thiemo De Bakker and Juan Carlos Ferrero, respectively.

Robin Soderling advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Saturday afternoon with a dominant 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Thiemo De Bakker. Soderling needed just an hour and 42 minutes top cap off a performance that saw him strike 30 winners to just 19 unforced errors. The fifth-ranked Swede dropped serve only once and converted six of his 11 chances.

Soderling lost a mere six service points in the first set and his second break of the day finished it off in style. He also closed out the third set--and the match--with his sixth break of the day. A generally hopeless De Bakker fired eight aces, but he managed just 23 winners in the midst of 35 errors. Next up for Soderling is Albert Montanes, who advanced when Kei Nishikori retired early in the second set.

Jurgen Melzer advance in similar fashion, rolling over Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 in a mere one hour and 44 minutes. Ferrero complained about leg soreness after the match and did not move particularly well, although it might have been a lost cause no matter what against an in-form Melzer.

The Austrian, continuing to heat up as the match progressed, wrapped up his effort with 34 winners and 24 errors. He connected on 10 aces while dropping only nine points in his last eight service games. Next up for Melzer is five-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer.
