  • Isner picks up another win at U.S. Open

    9/4/10 5:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner picks up another win at U.S. Open John Isner reaches the U.S. Open third round on Friday, taking out Marco Chiudinelli in four sets. Tommy Robredo also advances as Julien Benneteau retires.

For the second time in as many U.S. Open matches, John Isner put aside injury concerns and powered his way to another victory. Isner ousted Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 in second-round action on Friday, needing two hours and 57 minutes to book a date with Mikhail Youzhny.

One break was enough for Isner to take the first set, as he did not face a single break point. Chiudinelly, however, broke for an immediate 2-0 lead in the second and never came close to giving back the advantage. The Swiss lost a mere five points in five service games en route to leveling the match at one set apiece.

The turning point came in a crucial third of play, and it was not decided until late in a tiebreaker. Isner seized a quick mini-break for a 2-0 lead when Chiudinelli double-faulted, but the 6'9'' American gave it back at 5-3 with an errant forehand. Isner saved the first set point at 5-6 when his opponent missed a retu7rn, Chiudinelli survived at 6-7 with a forehand winner, but Isner got a final mini-break for 8-7 and closed things out with an ace.

From there the No. 18 seed maintained control, dropping only three points in his last five service games. Isner converted a break chance at 4-4 when Chiudinelli sent a forehand well long and the match ended one game later with a love service hold.

Isner finished with 24 aces and just one double-fault while firing 70 winners. He is joined in the third round by Tommy Robredo, who advanced when Julien Benneteau retired during a second-set tiebreaker due to a wrist injury.

Robredo led 6-4 and was up 2-1 in the tiebreaker, on serve, when it ended. The Spaniard will meet Michael Llodra for a spot in round four.
