  • Gasquet upends Davydenko, Fish moves through

    9/3/10 4:26 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gasquet upends Davydenko, Fish moves through The No. 6 seed Nikolay Davydenko was knocked out of the US Open by the talented Richard Gasquet of France.

Richard Gasquet def. Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4, 6-2

Nikolay Davydenko of Russia never got going in his second round match against Richard Gasquet. The Frenchman has spent a year trying to re-find his form after a brief substance ban, which was eventually overturned.

Gasquet was mentally tough throughout the match. Davydenko had 5 break points on the Frenchman’s serve, but converted none of them. Gasquet converted 4 of the 5 break point chances he earned.

Gasquet’s backhand was clicking the way it had when he was in the top 10. Davydenko’s game buckled under the weight of the Frenchman’s variety and his superior net play. The next opponent for Gasquet will be the winner of Kevin Anderson and Thomaz Bellucci.

Mardy Fish def. Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-0, 6-2

American Mardy Fish had a slightly shaky start to his second round match against Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas. Fish was actually broken early in the match, and didn’t manage to gain the break back until Cuevas was serving for the set at 5-4. The American secured his first service break for 5-5 and secured 14 of the next 16 games.

The second two sets featured the Fish that already won 2 titles this summer in Atlanta and Newport and a run to the Cincinnati final where he pressed Roger Federer hard. The American’s continued good form sets him up as a dark horse to win the entire tournament.

Fish will take on Arnaud Clement, the French veteran in the third round.

I feel so sorry for Davy. After his wrist injury, he is not the same player anymore. I hope he quickly regain his form, if not he'll be out of top ten soon, when his WTF points from last year drop off. Worst still he can't even defend those points if he is not inside the top eight and can't qualify for the WTF this year.

Congrats to Gasquet though for the win. He always has the honor of bumping into these top ten players early in the slams- Rafa in ist round last yr at the USO, Murray in the 1st or 2nd round at the FO this year and now Davy. He finally score a win this time over a top ten and advance to the third round. Good for him, I hope he can go far here, maybe meeting Nole (hopefully) in the QF?
