  • Roddick out of the US Open in second round stunner

    9/2/10 6:07 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick out of the US Open in second round stunner Andy Roddick summer of woes continued in New York with a second round ouster at the hands of Janko Tipsarevic.

American Andy Roddick finds himself out in the second round of US Open for the first time in his career. The No. 9 seed was ousted in 4 sets by Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic, ranked 44 in the world.

This match started with Roddick playing well and Tipsarevic making his customary errors. The American was able to secure a 6-3 first set, and went up an early break in the second set. Just when the match appeared as though it was going to be a routine win for Roddick, the Serb found his game.

Tipsarevic broke back to level the match, and with Roddick getting increasingly defensive in his play, The Serb broke again at 5-6 to take the set and level the match at a set a piece.

The drama increased in the third set. Roddick had a highly vocal disagreement with a lines judge when she called a foot-fault, and then claimed it was his right foot (his back foot) that touched the line. Instant replays showed that the American had foot-faulted, but with his left foot.

Roddick managed to stave off 3 break points to hold in that game, but Tipsarevic won the set anyway on a passing shot that Roddick decided not to play, thinking it would go out.

The foot-fault incident seemed to wake Roddick up. The fourth set was much more lively from the American, though his shot selection was still questionable at times.

Tipsarevic was the better player through the fourth set, but Roddick served well enough to stay in the set and force the tiebreaker. The first mini-break of the match went to Tipsarevic, and excellent play from the Serb set up match point at 6-4 in the breaker. A good first serve and then a clutch volley at the net gave the Serb the upset win.

Shame about Andy ... Tipsarevic was great fun tonight ... played those last three sets with panache.

some winners by tipsy from both wings were just outstanding. congrats.

panache yep, that's the word for tipsy today. strong and focussed, never deviated from the game plan. hope to see him in the quarters against nole.

This is not the first time Tipsy has beaten Roddick in a slam. I think he did beat Roddick at Wimbledon one year, if I'm not wrong, it was 2008. Tipsy played really well today and took his chances and stayed focused, not affected by the foot fault drama of Roddick.

Roddick was clearly not at his best physically (I suspect he would still have the mono effect) that's why those who predicted that he'll beat Nole in the QF(if they get there) would be disappointed.

Wow did not expect to wake up to this! Roddick out, Berdych out!
Congrats to tipsy, seems like he played an amazing match! I must catch the highlights.

luckystar- nope not disappointed. Very surprised.
Hope Roddick recovers, as I like him.

First, congrats to Tipsy, for a well-played match. he was the better player today, so kudos to him. I hope Tipsy can keep up the great match play and make it to the QFs, and win. Roddick told Tipsy not to go and lose in the next round like he did the last time they played.

About 90% of my instincts told me Roddick would lose, but 10% kept hoping against hope, he'd win. However, even if he did win, I doubt he'd get past Monfils, who likes to keep his opponent running. It was a very tough draw compared to the draws of the other Americans, and most of the other top 10 players. I'm hoping the remaining Americans in the draw can do well, and keep American tennis in the buzz. I'm hoping that Fish and Isner will do well, or maybe, just maybe Sam.

I think Roddick is still suffering from the mono. He looks very gaunt, tired and drained. He was not his normal chipper self, and it showed from the first set.

It's sad for me to see Andy lose so early, but I'm consoled that he doesn't have a lot of points to defend, as that would have been very hard to digest. And, with Berdych losing today, Tsonga not playing, DelPotro out, I think Roddick will either move up one ranking position, or remain at No. 9. I also would like to see him concentrate on playing tourneys post USO and doing well, as he normally likes to close down after the USO and sit out the balance of the year. If he were to play some additional post USO tourneys, he'll be able to up his ranking and salvage his tennis season, thus making for a not so bad year.. That said, here's hoping ....

What a wonderfu, well-deserved win for Janko. He deserved the win and I wish for him to get through Monfils next.
