Andy Roddick has suffered another disappointment, taking his only second-round loss in nine years at the US Open, his cause not helped by an on-court feud with officials after a foot-fault call.
The American whose only Grand Slam title came in New York seven years ago, was enraged after being called for the serving error in which the lineswoman mis-identfied which of his feet dragged illegally across the line. Roddick carried on a running dialogue with the chair umpire even after the woman was replaced at mid-match after the technically correct call.
The 28-year-old's loss was his second early exit at Grand Slam in 2010 after going out in the Wimbledon fourth round.
But it could have been worse: "I'll sleep a lot better than I did at Wimbledon, which basically I just hand-fed someone (Lu Yen-Hsn) a win. Tonight I felt like the guy earned it. That's probably easier to deal it, when you make the guy earn it and he comes up with the goods."
"It's still not fun obviously."
Roddick refused to blame a recent brush with glandular fever for his sub-par form. "I've been dealing with this for a little bit. It's been a short year as far as all things being perfect at one time. It hasn't really been that way too often."

I thought Andy was going to go far this tournament. He had said he was healthy again and this was realistically his best/last chance to win a major title. He's not a contender at the AO, he can't beat Rafa at RR and he can't beat Rafa/and or Roger at Wimbledon. By the next USO at almost 30 it seems very unlikely for him to come even close to a second major in his career.

Earlier this year I had a hunch he might retire at the end of this season but got shouted down by a lot of people. He had contemplated pulling out a couple of years ago when he was in decline, and then his wife persuaded him to give it another chance. However she now says she wants to live in the country and have children. Hmmm.

he can still be a force in tennis but needs to control his temperament on the court.

rfzr...............despite my post above.................i am with you in this one.
Before Federer and Rafa became the champions that they are now, they had to moderate their temperaments. You can never become a great champion if you dont correct ure temper. I mean it can happen once in a while but this is usual for Roddick. I like him but i just think he has no manners!!!.......full stop!!
See how Sod and Murray have all improve their games..................they are a lot more settled/subdued now and the results are proof!!

Such a shame. Andy's such a great athlete and humanitarian off the court (like with his charity and how helpful he is to up and coming Americans), but he insists on being an such an ornery jerk on the court, mean to the umpires and ballkids. It's probably karma why he can't win any more majors.

OUCH, cool it guys with the name calling. Did any of you see the ball Roddick hit in after the foot fault, that was called out? He lost that point due to the bad call and inefficient umpire. That point could have probabaly given him a break point and turned the set around.
Don't be so quick to judge as all of the players do it. A lot of them curse in their own language at the umpire, except they don't look at the umpire when doing it, and those of us who don't speak their language aren't any the wiser.
I can name many incidents that the top players didn't display exemplary behaviour but I won't, because their fans wouldn't want to hear it, and it's mostly because I have respect for their feelings. We roddick fans have feelings too, you know.
If Roddick doesn't win another major, it won't be the end of the world for him as he's got a lot of irons in the fire, where he's very well connected, and can leave tennis to lead a very happy and fruitful life. Not many players can do that, as their world is only about tennis. And, it won't be *karma* due to what some perceive to be bad manners.

Von,
Roddick is my favorite player by the way, and am ALWAYS watching him play rooting for him whenever I get the chance. But just because I desperatly want him to win Wimbledon doesn't make his constant rants and rude behavior acceptable. Yes the umpire was wrong with the pointless detail about which foot crossed the line, but people make mistakes. I wish he would deal with it more respectably.
